Is health care a right or a responsibility? During the third presidential debate, Barack Obama declared it to be a right, while John McCain called it a responsibility.- advertisement -

These assertions underscore the different philosophies underlying the candidates’ proposals. One assumes that everyone is entitled to health care; the other puts the responsibility for obtaining health care squarely on the shoulders of the consumer.

Consumers already have plenty of responsibilities, such as the responsibility to find a way to retire even if the stock market trashes their retirement plans, for which they have complete responsibility.

Driver stuck with faulty odometer

Dear Terry,
I have a 2005 Toyota Camry that has about a 9 percent speedometer and odometer error. I was told by the dealer (and the arbitration people at Toyota) that if it was less than 10 percent, they had no responsibility to fix it. The car now has more than 141,000 miles, so warranty is not an issue.

The issue of faulty odometers has largely revolved around a car’s warranty — if a car shows more miles that it has actually traveled, an owner can claim the warranty should be adjusted to cover the additional miles on the odometer. (more…)

Lender write-off boosts driver’s tax

Dear Terry,
I leased a 2007 auto about 20 months ago. I lost my job about six months into the lease, and between my house, car and credit cards, I got three months behind on everything before going back to work.
I got caught up on the house, but once I was 90 days behind on the car, they wanted the vehicle back. Well, my credit was so bad I couldn’t get another car, so I asked them to accept a three-month catch-up payment once I had the money. They said I missed being able to do that by two days. They told me someone would come get the car. (more…)
